A relaxing full-day excursion to Tivoli, a small town north of Rome, which has been a treasured location for suburban residences since ancient times thanks to its temperate climate, natural springs and the famous quarries of travertine (the type of white stone used to built the Colosseum). We will visit the two most famous villas in Europe, both heritage of Unesco: Villa Adriana, the huge residence of the Emperor Hadrian (IInd century AC), often compared to the royal palace in Versailles and Villa d’Este, commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito d’Este. The Villa is well known for its spectacular gardens (which also became the model for the Versaille palace) and its beautiful fountains.
We will spend a fantastic day discovering the pleasures of the Roman “otium”.
